Hillary trail to Everest trek, following the popular expedition route to Everest, begins from the market town of Jiri and passes through an area that is predominantly Sherpa in nature. From Jiri, we hike to the important Sherpa region of Shorung (lower country) which is famed for its rolling hills forested with oak and pine trees. The well built stone houses and wooden bridges in traditional Sherpa design reflect the impressive domestic architecture of Nepal. Next, we enter the Pharak region ( middle country) at the Dudh Kosi bridge crossing. Sherpas in this region live intermixed with Rais and Magars, people of hill origin who form the backbone of British Gurkha Regiments.
Finally arriving in Khumbu (high country), we, first, stop to see the sights of Namche Bazar – the world famous capital of the Sherpas. Then, we head on to explore the higher country where all the Himalayan giants stand. Arriving Lobuche, we make an early start to the view point of Kalapathar (5545m./18188ft.) for a sunrise view of Mt. Everest and numerous other peaks that unfold before us in a 360 degree panorama.
On our return we stop to look at the newly rebuilt Thyangboche monastery – the spiritual and cultural center of the Khumbu Sherpa people and reach Lukla to end our trek.
